What to do with your maternity clothes after you deliver

You probably invested a lot of money in your maternity clothes. Driven by the desire to be comfortable and stylish it’s easy to do. And with shops like Destination Maternity and other Pregnancy Boutiques offering more fashionable and trendy clothes - options abound. But maternity clothes are just that and they have a limited "shelf life".

Don’t get rid of your maternity clothes too quickly

After giving birth your body doesn’t return to normal overnight - well unless you’re Heidi Klum. So it’s likely you’ll be wearing your maternity clothes in the reverse order you purchased them - from larger to smaller - until you fit into your pre-pregnancy clothes. And even then, some of today’s maternity wear is stylish enough to be worn long afterwards. So your invest may last longer than you think.

When it’s finally time to ditch the pregnancy garb

First, make sure you’re done having kids. Far too often new mom’s will want to purge too soon. Usually it’s better to hold onto a few of your favorite outfits just-in-case. Store them for a while until you’re confident no more children are in your future. Once that’s assured - you have several options.

Loan them to friends or relatives

Usually, you’ll know someone else that’s pregnant - a friend, a neighbor, or a family member. You can offer them your maternity clothes and help them save a little money. And there’s the added benefit that if a surprise occurs in your life, you can borrow them back later.

Donate them

Donating maternity clothes to your local charity is always good. You can claim a tax break for the donation and you’re helping out others. And maternity clothes are always in demand so your donation will be extra helpful.

Sell them online (or swap them)

A quick search online will reveal loads of options to either sell your old clothes online or to swap them for post-pregnancy clothes. Think of it like an online yard sale or swap meet. Of course you’ll have to pack up your clothes and ship them - but usually the buyer pays the shipping.

Good old fashioned yard sale

There’s still plenty of bargain shoppers and yard sale lovers that drive around on the weekends looking for great buys. And finding maternity clothes for themselves or others certainly falls within the good find category. So gather up your clothes and other pregnancy items and enjoy the day outside with your little one - just remember sunscreen for you and your baby.
