What can I do about my stretch marks?

Striae (stretch marks) generally occur after periods of rapid weight change or hormonal changes typical during puberty, pregnancy, or bodybuilding. Stretch marks can also be caused by certain medical conditions (e.g., Marfan syndrom, Cushing’s syndrome) or stem from some medications. For treatments for medically “induced” striae consult your medical professional - today we’ll be discussing only skin scaring due to weight change and hormonal changes.

So what can be done?

Stretch marks due to puberty or pregnancy may fade over time. Once the body adjusts or returns to “normal” the skin scarring may repair itself or at best fade and soften in appearance. However, if stretch marks don’t fade naturally, there are many OTC and medical options available to help conceal your marks.

If your marks are subtle or localized where they can be covered by clothing then choosing the correct outfit or swimsuit can help cover your stretch marks. While not the perfect solution, it’s the simplest way to cover up. If this isn’t an option for you or is an unsatisfactory solution, worry not, options abound.

Topical OTC creams, lotions, or ointments

As we’ve mentioned previously in other articles new breakthroughs in cosmeceutical ingredients occur regularly. From peptides and antioxidants to potent botanicals and traditional emollients (e.g., cocoa butter, shea butter, etc.) ingredient options are abundant. The effectiveness of ingredients vary from person to person so you may need to try several formulas until you discover the solution that works for you. Most OTC stretch mark creams and lotions are not harmful. You should always spot test for sensitivity or consult your doctor if you’re concerned.

Step-up to prescription strength

Doctors can prescribe more powerful skin care treatments. Retinoid creams have proven successful in fading stretch marks. Or dermatologists can turn to microdermabrasion, chemical peels, or newer laser therapies. The later may also be available at high-end spas or salons (though make sure the person administering the treatment is well trained).

So the answer to “what can I do about my stretch marks” is both simple and complex. Since striae are unique to each individual, as is the most effective treatment method. So while treatment options are many, finding the correct coarse of treatment can take a bit of time and come down to trial and error. And budget can affect the choice of stretch mark treatment. But don’t worry, new solutions are appearing almost daily, so even if you think you’ve exhausted all your treatment options - chances are a new development in stretch mark skin care is right around the corner.
